Ngorongoro Crater
Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most famous wildlife destinations in Africa and a highlight of any Tanzania safari. Located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and a natural sanctuary for an incredible variety of wildlife.
The crater was formed about 2–3 million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed inward after a major eruption. Today, the crater measures approximately 19 kilometers in diameter and covers about 260 square kilometers, creating a unique ecosystem that supports one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa.
Because of its natural enclosure, animals remain within the crater throughout the year, making it one of the best places in Tanzania to see wildlife in a single game drive.
